Praktik Garden

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

The first to open of a small chain of mid-range hotels – each with a distinct character, which in this case centres around a leafy garden – is still the prettiest. Though most of the rooms are kept simple, the common areas are a blaze of colour, thanks to Barcelona's favourite hotel designer, Lázaro Rosa-Violán.

Location

7 / 10

This part of the Eixample is not blessed with attractions, but neither is it saturated with tourists, and there are just enough bars and restaurants to keep it interesting, along with a stretch of great-value outlet shops for local designers and high-street brands.

Style & character

9 / 10

The entrance and small lobby are wonderful, filled with plants and lined with books, and even the corridors are riotously colourful, with their floor-to-ceiling wallpaper of huge vintage circus posters. The first floor is where it all happens, with the shady little patio that gives the hotel its name and where guests can comfortably lounge or work, along with a sunny indoor garden room and a tastefully eclectic lounge.

Service & facilities

7 / 10

It's a small and fairly low-budget hotel, so facilities are necessarily limited, and this makes the free Wi-Fi routers for guests to use around town especially welcome. Since there are no minibars, the hotel also offers a fridge for guests' use. Expect straightforward service at check-in and little other interaction with staff.

Rooms

8 / 10

Economy rooms are small and face an interior light well, but tall ceilings, white-washed walls and original features keep them cheerful. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms spotless. If you can, it's worth spending extra on the Superiors or Suites, which are much bigger and enlivened with a jumble of art and quirky design features. These (along with a couple of Economy rooms) have especially handsome bathrooms with deep blue tiling, framed prints on the walls and rainshowers. All have Gilchrist and Soames toiletries.

Food & drink

7 / 10

There is no bar or restaurant, but complimentary (and good) coffee and tea is served in the garden lounge in the mornings. There is a vending machine for soft drinks.

Value for money

7 / 10

Double rooms from €60 (£53)  in low season; and from €120 (£105) in high. No breakfast served. Free Wi-Fi.

Access for guests with disabilities?

Three rooms are 'semi-adapted', in that they don't quite hit official width requirements, but have doors wide enough for wheelchairs, bars and ramps for the shower and so on.

Family-friendly?

Cots are provided free of charge, but thereafter children must share beds with adults, since no extra beds are available. There is a microwave at reception for heating up bottles.
