Christmas trees - a cat-astrophe waiting to happen?

This week, Christmas trees are being put up in homes across the country, and it’s not only humans who are paying attention. Cats, in particular, are intrigued by the installation of what seems to them to be the perfect new cat toy.

Cats love climbing: it’s one of their key behavioural needs. When cats spend time outdoors, tree-climbing is one of their regular activities.

Indoor cats are often deprived of climbing opportunities, and in a cat’s eyes, a Christmas tree is the perfect antidote to this deficiency.

Cats don’t have the cognitive sentience to realise that Christmas trees are Christmas trees: to a cat, this unusual installation is simply an exciting source of entertainment.
